What Alternative Energy Source Should You Use For Your Hot Water System?

When purchasing a new hot water system, you may be concentrating on what type of hot water system you should choose. From tankless systems to boilers, there is a range of options that you could choose. Furthermore, there is virtually a limitless selection of models to select! But selecting the right hot water system is not merely about the type. You also need to factor in what will powder the hot water system, since water heating will account for a substantial amount of your residence's energy consumption. Other than electricity, there are alternative energy sources that can help you conserve your consumption when heating water. Below is a concise list of alternative energy sources you can consider for your hot water system.

Natural gas

Natural gas is hands down, a cheaper alternative to electricity, making it ideal for homes that consume a considerable volume of hot water. However, you should note that this source of energy is only viable if you already have a pre-existing gas connection in your home. Although traditional gas heaters were installed outdoors, modern versions that have a flue are being installed indoors. When electing to power your hot water system with gas, you have the option of choosing liquid petroleum gas, but you should note that this costs more than natural gas.

Heat pump

Although heat pumps are powered electrically, they are much more energy-efficient than relying solely on electrical energy to heat your water. These pumps work similar to air conditioning system since they too absorb the heat in the air and the heat subsequently warms the water in your tank. The main thing to note about heat pumps is that they need to be installed in a space that is well-ventilated so that it does not overheat. Hence, the best location for this energy source is outside.

Solar panels

Solar-powered hot water systems comprise of collector panels outside and a tank that is located inside your house. When you choose solar power as your preferred energy source, it is advisable to install the largest capacity tank that your property can manage. The reason for this is to ensure a substantial amount of hot water is stored to make up for days when there is insufficient sunlight. While the collector panels are typically installed on the roof, some homeowners may have to choose a different location. If your roof cannot accommodate the panels, ensure that the location you select is exposed to direct sunlight.
